Before John Woo’s A Better Tomorrow, there was a 1967 HK film named Story of a Discharged Prisoner. Showing the struggle of an ex-prisoner trying to find his place in the HK society. Unlike most Shaw Bros films of that time, it was shot outside, right in the Hong Kong streets, following the French New Wave (jazzy music, weird cuts…).
Despite its reputation, the film is hard to find; enjoy these clips:
The film will be screened at the Udine Film Fest 2010, but if you can’t wait, an unsubbed DVD was released early Jan ’10. Can we hope for an english-friendly copy soon?
