Back to basics? Takeshi Kitano returns as a badass yakuza! The self-reflective (boring) days seem to be now over: Outrage is about a power struggle between japanese mobsters. Co-produced by Warner Bros, it’ll be shown around the world. The film will be released in Japan on June 12th.

Maybe “badass,” but he’s still sticking it in the viewer’s face and laughing along the way. For what is this trailer? One minute of men scowling or yelling “f**king idiot!” in the camera with absolutely no narrative context. Quite funny if you think about ti.

I think it’s kinda awesome actually: a montage of angry Yakuza cussing each other out cut faster and faster until the title “OUTRAGE” comes up? Sounds about right, since they all appear to be… outraged!

That’s what is interesting about this. It certainly works to both evoke outrage and suggest violence (the body at the end), but as with many Kitano works, it works on several levels, one of which is comedic, another of which is playing with audience expectations (about genre, about Kitano, etc.). It works on a basic level, but also becomes something else if you think about it. Have you ever seen a trailer with just men yelling, one that shows outrage but gives no sense of why they are outraged–a yakuza film that doesn’t show any physical action? Looking at this trailer, I have a strong suspicion that Kitano is not going to make a regular yakuza movie, not just go back to the yakuza films he made of old. But…he has pulled the rug out from under us before, so we shall see.
