When Japanese Films Get (fan)Subbed...

While anime subbing has progressed over the years, we still don’t see that many japanese (or asian) films getting (proper) english subtitles. Of course, some big recent movies are fansubbed, like Sky Crawlers or Ichi (thanks to pop idol Haruka Ayase). But what about films we’ll never see in the West? Not kawaii enough I guess.

Hopefully, some fans (or warriors) are working on these rare films. For example, recently two fans created subtitles for Season of Terror, a film directed by Koji Wakamatsu. It’s about an ex-activist being watched by 2 detectives who have to be sure he won’t be a problem for society. This film was only released in Japan, like most of Wakamatsu’s films.

If you’re interested but don’t know where to find rare fansubs, keep an eye on this website. It can be useful… The choice is yours?

Kloofy really is a great place to find subtitles.

Calorifix has done an amazing job for French subtitles also.

And you can find plenty of website with a lot of subtitles : subscene, frigorifix, cswap, asiansubs…

Also, don’t forget communities of private trackers. Members of Karagarga, for example, are creating subs for a lot of rare movies (Asian or not).

But well, I’ve created subs in English for French movies so I can tell that it is a lot of work. Excepting very popular movies like Ichi, people wait for the subs coming with DVD release.
24 city and United Red Army for example have been available for weeks and there is still not subs.

I think if a list of Japanese movies that lacked subtitles from 2008 was made, that list would be shamefully long.

Raku> Strangely, (asian) airlines companies have bought many japanese films WITH english subtitles. See JG’s post.

WRG> Great video, any fanboys should watch it (it’s like this article)

That’s the same thing that happens at film festivals, the worst mistake I made was not going to see German + Rain at the London Film Festival last year…..now I realise I will probably never get to see that movie with subtitles.
