Usual sleaze from second-rate director Ohara, nothing memorable in the end but the nun imagery is quite omnipresent. Better than the lame ‘Runa Confession’ but still inferior to Ohara’s extravagant Wet & Rope.

Interesting that you call Ohara a second-rate director. Myself I’m not sure what to make of him. I’ve seen three films from him: Pink Hip Girl (one of the best meisaku roman movies and youth film in general… an absolutely charming film), White Rose Campus (rather effective violent pink thriller) and True Story of Women Condemned (a very lazy wip effort despite featuring a soundtrack by Down Town Boogie Woogie Band).

Well, i was not really convinced by his numerous S&M/WIP flicks (just save his Sasori rip-off, which was surprisingly not DVD-remastered!). However, the guy also worked for LOT of youth-oriented movie (including an ATG one!), some of which shares interesting connection with real show-business (after having retired from roman-porno, Ohara continued to shoot music-video). His Pink Hip Girl is indeed an interesting flick, and i’m sure his other youth movies are also far more satisfying … unfortunately, very few are them are available, even when digging in the old jp VHS crates.

True. I always wondered what was the logic behind Geneon’s dvd selection. They missed several interesting titles, including films that are considered masterpieces (Rape and Death of a Housewife…) as well as titles that would have notable sales potential (Female Ninja Magic…). And then they went to release films that not even the fans like. Too many Katsuhiko Fujii films for sure, haha.

Geneon selection is a bit strange indeed… some popular series almost gone totally MIA : danchizuma, pink hip girls .. while others such as Ama (Girl Divers) did resurfaced. On the other hand, Mondo Macabro selection is quite clear : japanese treatment of western formula .. grim thriller (Jack the ripper), nunsploitation (Lucia), de sade (jissoji’s) .. i won’t be surprised they will add the Sally May series

Btw, There is a (french) interview with Geneon RP curator Koichiro Kanayama (worth translating some excerpts?):

If you have time to translate some, then please. I’m sure a lot of people (including me) would be interested.

well, i think some excerpts will be ‘ok’ copyright-wise but no sure about the whole texts (btw, i never got answer from the guy .. as with the usual french suspects). Informations about RP are so sparse, it’s a shame these features never got translated (or midnighteye-ized), seems it better to rest well-hidden in the Cahier’s vaults. There’s also a pretty interesting anecdote about the hidden links between Tanaka’s She-beast market & Fukasaku’s Graveyard of Honor (<– teasing!)

She-Beast Market & Graveyard of Honor? I saw She-Beast Market a year ago (it was on Finnish TV, believe it or not) but Graveyard of Honor is still in my ‘unwatched dvds’ pile. I guess I need to place it on top of that pile now…
