Ishii was a man who gave me many hours of pleasure in my younger years with his SUPERGIANT episodes which became STARMAN in the US. I first saw one the same day I saw 2001: A SPACE ODYESSY and loved them both for quite different reasons. The mixture of film noir and sci fi in SUPERGIANT really interested me and still does and I have just seen MALFORMED MEN on DVD. It’s consciousness expanding cinema, again film noir and fantasy are combined. I like that combination. I’ve already seen it twice and will have many more viewings in the future. It also reminds me of the politically incorrect [in Japan] Ishiro Honda film, HALF HUMAN and Honda’s MATANGO. Ishii seemed like a very humble man in the documentary and I admire that quality.

BTW, thanks for the info on Wakamatsu on Cinebeats. I like your blog and will put up a link in my DVD review of Horrors. I understand a little French. I’ll be back to visit your excellent blog here often. Best Regards, Robert Monell

BTW, would you recommend BLIND BEAST vs KILLER DWARF and his remake of HELL? they are both at a local DVD outlet. Thanks again/I can’t wait to see more of his films!

I haven’t seen Blind beast & Hell, but feedbacks were just horrible.

You should try his early movies, like Fire Line/Black Line/Sexy Line/Yellow Line, some kind of film noir (mixed with a little of comedy) set in Japan. Or Abashiri Prison. These are quite classic movies, but interesting. I mean, this is not eroguro which is surprising, because honestly when people thinks “Teruo Ishii” it’s always “The Joy of Torture” or something like that.

And if you want to see Teruo Ishii at his best : Female Yakuza Tale & Bohachi = AMAZING ! It gives you and idea on how you can use the studio to create something beautiful, it’s like Suzuki’s Work (Tokyo Drifter) or An Actor’s Revenge (1963).

I know others Ishii’s movies are availables, like “The Executioner”, but well, it’s not that great when you’ve seen FYT or Bohachi. It’s a ‘funny’ actionner, and as often, you can see how Ishii is playing with a genre, pushing it to his limits (grotesque, gory, absurd).

    Réagissez !
