Love In The Buff! From Beijing With Love

# Chinese Movies,News1 Comment

Follow-up to Edmond Pang’s nicotine-infused rom-com Love in a Puff.

In 2010, Hong Kong director Edmond Pang directed two films; there was the social-slasher Dream Home, and, Love in a Puff. Which was also rated CAT III. Is it bloody violent? Nope.

It’s because of the explicit language – heavy use of local swear words – and contains “frequent smoking scenes” – knowing indoor smoking was banned in Hong Kong in 2007, with the film using the ban as the starting point of the romance…

So what’s up with Love In The Buff (and not “Butt”, thanks to the weird official font)? That’s a fresh start for director Pang, as it’s his first mainland production.

The story is set in Beijing, with the two former lovers meeting again – same lead actors, Shawn Yu & Miriam Yeung.

You might recognize Pang’s visual talent here, based on the trailer, each frame is carefully composed to reflect the characters’ inner feelings – it’s not your typical ugly rom-com, and that’s quite reassuring.

At the same time, it raises few questions; will it have any subversive resonance? Was the director free to do what he wanted…? So far, it seems to describe the daily routine of urban couples, with their doubts & fears – questioning fidelity of a relationship.

Love In The Buff is coming out in Chinese theaters in March 2012.

Oh my god, oh my god, oh, my, god.

I wish I had read your article prior to watching the video, I might have been better prepared. “Love in the buff” was corny enough but when the splash page came up at the end I just about wet myself.

I was drinking tea and now there’s tea all over my keyboard and desk.

What-what, in the butt.
