Hasaki Ya Suda! The Three Black Samurai

A short film paying tribute to old school Japanese sword-fighting movies!

Hasaki Ya Suda, also known as Swords, is using global warming as the starting point to depict an original but environmentally devastated future where three swordsmen are trying to survive.

This 25-min short film was made by young French-Burkinese director Cédric Ido — brother of Jacky, who played the projectionist in Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds. The film is really mixing different things together, like Japanese & African cultures, for example the language, it’s an African dialect with Japanese words. Also, it features an animated introduction, a simple & effective way to present the background of the story — watch it here with spanish subtitulados (para los bravos);

And of course, the most obvious thing here, the sword fights. Based on this teaser, it’s visually highly inspired by old school chambara; the choreography, the shot where samurai are running, the frame composition… It looks pretty exciting & promising — seems like it’s Ido’s first short film! It will be interesting to see how it works inside the story. So far, fuck yeah!

No idea when Hasaki Ya Suda will be available (online?), so as an extra, check out this VFX demo reel, showing how some special effects were done — wasn’t expected to find any effects in this film;
