Gorgeous. Cuban movie posters are gorgeous, and unique. Quite different from today’s marketing, with posters repeating always the same trends, with no real imagination. Just like some Eastern European countries, Cuba let some local artists creating true works of art, trying to capture the very essence of the films. Sometimes, it may look strange, or abstract, but it’s always visually surprising. Enjoy these 20+ posters!

# 17 Invisibles

• AKA The Seventeen Ninjas: Ammunition & Ambition, directed in 1965 by Motohiro Torii.
In the early 60s, ninja films became box office hits, with stories told from the perspective of these shadow fighters–like the Shinobi no Mono series, available on DVD. In response to this success, Toei Studios produced their own ninja films, The 17 Ninjas is one of them. To go further, read this review.

# La Batalla de Okinawa

• AKA The Battle of Okinawa, directed in 1971 by Kihachi Okamoto
Most japanese war films produced at the time were tring to show the courage of the japanese army. Hopefully, some directors, like Okamoto, managed to point out the absurdity of war, while criticizing the japanese imperial army. To give you some more clues about this poster, Okinawa was the last island before mainland Japan, and the battle is said to be the “Bloodiest Battle of the Pacific War“. That should explain why it’s in black, why the fist & why the Japanese flag is cut. Available on DVD.
