My Way! Another South Korean War Drama?

# Korean Movies,News1 Comment

The director of Brotherhood of War is back with another ambitious war film.

My Way focuses on the friendship between a Korean (Jang Dong-gun) & a Japanese (Joe Odagiri), who wanted to become Olympic runners but were forced to join the army when the war between Japan & U.S.S.R broke out. Few years & 12,000km later, these 2 friends meet again in German uniform, on Omaha beach at the beginning of the Normandy invasion…

If the plot wasn’t obvious enough, the trailer is proudly saying, “it’s going to be so serious, you will cry” – the music, the editing… Earlier during the promo, there was also the mention “inspired by true events”, often used to create some kind of emotional hook – because it’s true, it’s more touching. One thing for sure, after 7 years, South Korean director Kang Je-gyu is living up to the expectations, trying to surpass his previous efforts.

He’s making something louder, bigger and more intense. With immersive war scenes – thanks to the handheld camera, more explosions everywhere, with clearly identified good guys/bad guys… The film may avoid some typical war movies clichés, the director stated that, even though it involves some historical sensitive issues, “it’s not a conventional war story featuring perpetrators and victims. It strives to transmit humanist message, as it is about not giving up on your dreams even through the turmoil of war and even learning to forgive because of that dream“. Just like Brotherhood of war was about not forgetting who really is your family? Naive, you say?

(by the way, the film is a co-production between South Korea & China)

My Way is coming out in South Korea on Dec 2011. The US theatrical release is set for early 2012.
