009 RE:Cyborg! Renegades on Parade?

# Japanese Movies,News1 Comment

An anime film from one of the most interesting active japanese director.

His name is Kenji Kamiyama, best known for having directed series anime such as Ghost in the Shell, the glorious medieval adventure Moribito, or more recently, the spy-thriller Eden of the East.

In other words, highly recommended shows you need to (re)discover (urgently), in which Kamiyama took time to develop exciting universes & (philosophical) themes, without losing sight of the entertaining part.

What’s next? 009 RE:Cyborg. Based on a popular manga from the 60s, the story of an evil organisation kidnapping humans to turn them into powerful cyborgs. But somehow these cyborgs decide to fight together for their freedom, to destruct this organisation, while walking the redemption path.

It must be said that few months ago, director Mamoru Oshii worked on a 3D short-film also based on this story, and commissioned by Panasonic. It’s more of a demo-reel than anything else, giving the impression that Oshii seems currently more interesting into testing/exploring new technologies, before directing a whole new feature film.

Basically the preview video reveals the main cyborg characters, one can see some similarities with Oshii’s works – especially GitS, the jumping shots – also, notice this is cell shading/3D animation, it’ll be worth noting how Kamiyama uses it to enhance the film’s narrative/dynamics, even though some characters in this trailer have the dead eyes syndrome. By the way, Kenji Kawai is composing the soundtrack.

009 RE:Cyborg is scheduled to be released Fall 2012 in Japan, around the same time that Anno’s Evangelion 3.0. Quite exciting!

Here’s the 4-min preview;
