An anime-inspired actionner from Revenge: A Love Story director.
According to the official synopsis, Let’s Go! follows the story of “a street-wise young man (Juno Mak) [who] is offered a job as a bodyguard for a powerful gang boss (Wang Yu). Soon, he becomes embroiled in a violent battle against a sinister, power-hungry super-villain (Gordon Lam), forcing him to take up his destiny as a protector for all that is good.”
A crazy & fun plot for a nice entertainment borrowing from different genres? The film may really benefit from director Wong Ching-po’s visual touch, as the project finds its roots in the popular visual culture – Manga, Anime. This guy is always trying to create great images but sometimes, he goes a little bit too far. Take Revenge for example, he’s obsessed trying to get some kind of arty look, using lots of slow-mo, with long shots… and it doesn’t add much to the simplistic story. Quite pointless in the end.
So, this year, one of the rare decent-looking live-action “adaptations” of an anime/manga may be coming from Hong Kong, not Japan? Let’s Go! should be released in HK before the end of 2011.
