Headshot! The World Upside Down

# News,Thai Movies4 Comments

An original thriller from Thai director Pen-ek Ratanaruang.

Headshot is about Tul, a hitman shot in the head, who wakes up after 3 months in coma. But something has changed, he now sees the world literally upside down. He later meets a girl, and starts wondering what really happened the day he got shot…

As expected with Pen-ek Ratanaruang, the film looks visually astonishing, with gorgeous colors & shots (see 1’50sec). But, this trailer seems to give away too much details about the story, which is supposed to be a mystery. According to the TIFF programmer, the film has a “chronologically complex narrative”, with the main character trying to figure out the big picture – a little bit like Christopher Nolan’s Memento?

Presented as a “crime noir”, the film takes us into the dark side of Thailand, with corruption and violence everywhere, leaving apparently no room for any kind of morality – no wonder the lead character is seeing the world differently. It will be interesting to see how far the director is pushing the limits, how he uses this visual idea/what is its narrative purpose… Anyway, the film has this arthouse/moody vibe, featuring some violent action-oriented scenes.

Headshot will premiere at the Toronto Film Fest 2011, coming out in Thailand before the end of 2011.

Thanks for tipping me off about this film. I first came across Pen-ek Ratanaruang’s works in conjunction with Asia Society NY’s recent Blissfully Thai film series. Saw “Transistor Love Story” and “Ploy” and enjoyed both. Should be very interesting in seeing what he does in what I assume is new cinematic territory for him.
