A Letter to Momo! By Jin-Roh director!

The director of Jin-Roh suddenly disappeared few years ago, but he wasn’t missing or something like that, he was just working on his second feature film, A Letter to Momo. The project has been in development for 7 years, and is finally becoming a reality!

A Letter to Momo is about a young girl, who’ve just lost her father, she’s moving to her Mother’s house in the japanese countryside, far from her usual urban environment. There, she stumbled upon an unfinished letter written by her father, with the only words “Dear Momo…”. And she also find a mysterious book.

On this movie, director Hiroyuki Okiura is really taking care of every major points of the film, like the script, storyboard… It looks like a more personal project, this time he’s not working on someone else’s story (Jin-Roh was written by Mamoru Oshii, part of the Kerberos saga). It’s his original idea, totally!

Based on this teaser, this seems to be an intimate family drama with some fantasy elements added. Apparently, there’s no social or political stuff involved. But the film may be influenced by some kind of japanese traditional folktale (just like Jin Roh was retelling the Little Red Riding Hood)?

Back in February ’11, the first official announcement (yep, it’s quite fresh) proudly claimed that it’s “traditional hand drawn animation”. And watching this first teaser, you can really notice the beauty of the work, with some astonishing visuals (raindrops, the running, the landscapes). In other words, an ambitious project!

A Letter to Momo will come out on April 21, 2012 in Japan.
