The Viral Factor! Dante Lam Going International?

# Chinese Movies,News1 Comment

The new action drama from HK director Dante Lam, shot in the Middle East & in Malaysia, with the idea to capture the “realistic and oppressive feel” of these places. In order to give us a “completely different experience”. Quotes from the director himself!

The Viral Factor is about two opposed brothers (Jay Chou & Nicholas Tse) who decide to unite their force to stop a criminal from releasing some sort of highly dangerous virus onto the world. It looks like another fast-paced & intense action film from Dante Lam, dealing here with terrorism & mass-murder, and how people reacts when confronted with such threats.

Interesting enough, keeping in mind that Lam is kind-of an over-the-top director, with his sense for melodramatic pathos, over-tortured characters, his “shaky-cam” realism… One can guess he’s going to approach this sensitive subject very seriously. And watching this first teaser (below), you can already feel that, with the music, the slo-mo explosions… Serious business is serious! Anyway, it will be interesting to see how the director takes advantage of this non-HK environment.

The film is supposedly trying to reach an international audience, it’s a big budget thriller for Dante Lam ($25m), shot in different place around the world and you can on-screen see where the money has been spent (tanks, humvee, and so on). Let’s hope it delivers the goods, and helps Lam getting known outside HK film buffs.

The Viral Factor, coming out in HK theaters early February 2012 (Lunar New Year period).
