Random Thoughts on Shaft series

Some notes on two anime series directed by Akiyuki Shinbo!

Natsu No Arashi!

During time travels, characters can’t meet their double or they cease to exist. So, there’s nothing better than shots from the sky/on a high to show us precisely where they are – without losing our visual marks. You can only see the purple/dark mask; obviously, it allows us to focus on the most important part of the screen. It must be said that most scenes of these series are using these masks, strange choice.

Bakemonogatari

Playing with words/puns, is oftenly seen as childish pointless games in the West, although some famous writers used it to carry knowledge/ideas. In this example, a high-school girl has no weight, so she’s taken to an exorcist to understand the reason. In fact, it’s only because she’s suppressed some difficult feelings that she has no weight. Okay, but what’s the point? In japanese “思い (feelings) and 重い (weight) are both pronounced omoi“. In fact, language directly affects reality. Also, these feelings have taken the form of a terrifying crab… made of these words.

Kind of frustrating, because most of the time, Shinbo doesn’t do much with these great ideas. And surprisingly, it’s not the case with Madoka Magica, which is among the best anime series produced so far in 2011. Remember this?
