Revisiting the end of the samura era, Bakumatsu Jyunjyoden (幕末純情伝, 1991- feel free to translate) plays with some historical well-known figures.
Starting with Soji Okita, one of the finest sword of the Shinsengumi, who is literally depicted here as a girl. It also appears that Ryoma Sakamoto (Ken Watanabe’s first major role, it seems) is described as a non-violent intellectual attracted to men (?). Anyway, judging by this clip, the film looks like a light-hearted comedy, with a little bit of romance, plus some nice sword fights;
