Park Chan-Wook. Iphone. What?

# Korean Movies,News1 Comment

Just like that, famous south korean director Park Chan-wook decided to direct an Iphone 30-min short film. Quite surprising (does it justify all the buzz?).

He’s not the first south korean director to make this choice, people like Jeong Yoon-cheol (Man who was Superman) or Lee Joon-ik (King and the clown) did the same back in October ’10 (but their films aren’t yet visible, outside the festival-circuit?). Those directors shared some precious information about making an Iphone 4 short-film. And we know south korean directors are always trying to offer elegant visuals, that’s especially the case of Park Chan-wook (remember Old boy or Thirst).

But the Iphone camera has problems dealing with white balance, a limited depth of field, out of focus borders. It can be clearly seen on the following stills/trailer from PCW’s short-film Night Fishing.

One question, how did he manage to take advantage/overcome these limitations?

For example, he said that night sequences have been shot in black & white, “based on the technological limitations and aesthetic judgment” (FYI, the film alternates between reality & fantasy). Behind the beauty of an artistic gadget, produced by one of the main phone company in South Korea, we still don’t know much about the source of the project. Anyway, it may explain why PCW and his brother choose Iphone over a Canon 5D Mark II (Rubber), or a RED ONE camera (District 9).

Before making Flying Sword of Dragon Gate, Tsui Hark also enjoyed some experimentation time to discover 3D. It was supposed to be just some tests, but it turned out to be Catching Monkey, a new & unexpected film. And (almost) at the same time, one of the main South Korean director is experimenting with… an Iphone. Amazing, isn’t it?
