From Venice 2010: Sion Sono's Cold Fish

Seems like Sion Sono’s new horror pic (trailer) is definitely interesting!

FilmBizAsia – 8/10

[T]he script has a single-purpose drive that seems to express a working out of some personal emotion within Sion [...] Though there’s considerable gore on display, it’s largely cartoonish. Cold Fish is not so much a blood-and-guts horror movie, more a danse macabre about social breakdown.

Variety

Although reportedly based on a true story, with its buckets of blood, screechy thesping and pervy air of hysteria, horror pic “Cold Fish” couldn’t easily be mistaken for anything other than what it is: another fervid fantasia hatched by cult Japanese helmer Sion Sono.

Twitch

Sono brings us a highly convincing story in which its characters try to find and accept reality after a tragic event. With a relaxed pacing and good rhythm [...] the director managed to find the right balance in a lot of things, like for example the calmness of the dialogs VS the extreme violence.

IndieWire

[A] serial killer movie derailed by its maker’s inability to pitch a scene at anything quieter than a shout.

Liberation [France]

Sion Sono’s Cold Fish is hysterical, sad and hilarious [...] it deserves right away the “sick film” Tin Lion award.
