Criterion: Psychedelic Cat & Samurai in Oct!

Criterion will (re)release Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai (on Oct 19), plus Obayashi’s strange ghost tale House (on Oct 26), both on BluRay! This one came out ealier this year in the U.K (MoC), so what’s new in the Criterion edition? Well, check the features:

• New, restored high-definition digital transfer (with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray edition)
• Constructing a House, a new video piece featuring interviews with director Nobuhiko Obayashi, story scenarist and daughter of the director Chigumi Obayashi, and screenwriter Chiho Katsura
• Emotion, a 1966 experimental film by Obayashi
• New video appreciation by director Ti West (House of the Devil)
• Theatrical trailer
• New and improved English subtitle translation
• PLUS: An essay by Chuck Stephens

One little last thing, Marc Walkow (who brought us Nikkatsu gangsters films, Gory-pinky japanese classics… and soon, the Sushi Typhoon madness) expressed on twitter his mind about this release:

Criterion announces Obayashi’s HOUSE DVD/BluRay for Oct though it appears I’m no longer involved in production of the disc. More’s the pity. A shame because if it weren’t for disc producer Curtis and my efforts, people would only be getting a bare-bones disc, without supplements. The folks in charge at Criterion are famously skittish of genre films, refusing to recognize their place in film history except as curios.
