Don’t know if the anime mythology conference deals directly with this issue ; Taken from this work-in-progress pdf publication :
D.W. Winnicott’s concept of the transitional object provides a way of thinking about animation as a universal psychic process, one which is as crucial to the process of socialization and individual development as performance, and is inseparable from it.
So, basically, robots, magical girls… can be seen as transitional objects. Boys become men when piloting giant robots and facing reality. And girls become women when they stop living in a fantasy world to finally, face reality.
In other words, helping people to believe in themselves.
