Why you want to see Kore-eda's Air Doll

It’s always interesting to see how distributors try to sell a movie. Take for example, Hirokazu Kore-Eda’s Air Doll, starring the korean beauty, Bae Doo-Na. A story about loneliness & what it means to be human. In Japan, the poster has this “quest for sense” touch. While in France… Well, that’s quite obvious, right?

Japanese vs. French poster!

When it’s not an old creepy korean lady, it’s a young naked one!

Well done guys! Vive la France!

Don’t know which one is worse actually. The japanese poster shows a maid looking for something. Meaning of life? Maybe. Someone to love? Yes. Japanese males love maid(s), and imagination does all the work.

Well, the film is about a (artificial) “maid” looking for something, like life. The poster is very accurate, if not really that stylish.

Of course, it’s about a sex doll, too, but in terms of mood, the French poster is really far off. And ugly as hell.

Maids are always good, as long as they are the Japanese.

The thing is, scenes like that are actually plentiful in the movie. Having mainly witnessed the cutesy/whimsical Japanese advertising campaign, the nudity and sex were a bit on the surprising side, even though I think it was completely appropriate within the context of the story. I guess it’s a good example of how PR campaigns can mislead the public in either direction.

it is a shot from the film, that french poster, and it is my favourite shot of the film – for all the wrong reasons, perhaps – but a poster with a still, especially out of overall context or without an understanding of how the story plays out, is pretty likely to be just another example of seemingly hitting the mark and simultaneously missing it. still, it’s fun too.

I’ve seen the film (my review: http://asiashock.blogspot.com/2010/04/air-doll.html), and the Japanese poster captures the overall vibe of the film far more than the French one (although we do get an eye full of the lovely Ms. Bae along the way).
