From the many negative comments posted on Twitter, the Cannes audience didn’t really like Nakata’s new film. And it seems the press shares the same feeling…

@gailtolley Chatroom – quite gripping and stylish but paints a very negative view of the internet which I didn’t quite buy.
@Screenrush Just finished watching Chatroom. Dull. That is all.
@GuyLodge Was just chatting with @DaveKarger and he goes one further: thinks “Chatroom” is one of the worst films he’s ever seen. Good times!
@JasonCritic its a disaster from nakata. Who thought that was a good idea? Oh. Film 4 did.
@liveincannes Saw Nakata’s Chatroom! I’m going on chatroulette, it’ll be better.
@heyuguysblog Chatroom is a brilliant, claustrophobic, über-modern horror. Most uncomfortable movie since Eden Lake.
@amesrocchi “Very Special Episode” cyber-melodrama somewhat redeemed by the Existenz-styled “virtual world” look-and-feel.
@cobblehillis Damaged teen uses his avatar to browbeat others into suicide. A redonkulous cautionary tale ripped from 1993′s headlines. Best part of CHATROOM was when BlackBerry screens lit up during credits, apparently to see these “suicide rooms” the kids are into.
@totalfilm disappointing yoof thriller lacking surprise and subtlety…feels like a first-time effort.
@mattnoller Chatroom (10 Nakata W/O): 1995 called. It wants its thing old people are afraid of back.
- From the press
• Variety
[The film] tries to tap into anxieties about the online activities of contempo teens, but the result is more likely to prompt auds to ROTFL than tremble in their seats… pic has major bugs in its system, starting with the clunky script by Enda Walsh and running through cast’s shrill perfs.
A bold take on ostensibly over-familiar cyber-themes, Chatroom finds an inventive visual correlative for its psychological and sociological investigations, only to go off the rails in a rushed and bathetic climax.
• FilmBiz
Second English-language movie by The Ring director Nakata Hideo lacks all his trademark atmosphere and tension, as well as coherence. Rapid play-off among audiences lured by Nakata’s reputation or the chatroom subject.
• Excessif (France)
We expected more from Nakata than just another simple-minded comment on the internet insanity and identity made in facebook. A lolspeak rofl omg film.

When a horror movie has a gang of teen in it, it will be sure very bad, even if Nakata is the director. Its written in the sky. His english wannabe director style is totally something I hate from him since he began to work on the Ring’s remakes. I will totally pass this one. I will not even try to find it on internet.
