What Happens to Japanese Cinema?

If you’re wondering where are the good actors, or directors in Japan, this might help you.

First of all, “Japanese actors who can actually act“, behind the provocative title, this article only points out some real actors, not talent agencies’ stars/products. What’s the difference? Some say that “risk separates stars from actors”.

As for directors; Nikkatsu is launching a ‘roman porno’ revival – softcore sex films. And it seems the studio sees it as:

… an opportunity for emerging filmmakers and actors to make their mark. Over the last few years, Japan’s box office has been dominated by TV network-produced films, which are staffed by their own production crews

Could it be the same with the Sushi Typhoon label? A way to train new talents?

The article fail to mention that the non-Nikkatsu erotic film are still existing since the 60s. They struggle hard to exist but still represent 10% of the 500 movies produced in 2009. Unless the roman-porno brand give bigger exposure/funds to these works, i don’t expect noticeable change in that field. It worth to be noted that these movie were screened in only one movie theater for this launch (Eurospace, Tokyo) and got simultaneous sat-broadcast. The Danchizuma remake got pretty poor feedback (M.Arnold ‘but given the quality of the first one, I think I’ll continue to spend my time watching lower budget sex films in Pink theaters instead.)
