Japan's Censorship System

This little logo always appears next to the movie title, it’s the Eirin logo – the Japanese film classification board. The Japan Times published an overview about this system; its history, how films are classified, how it deals with sexually explicit material…

Despite controversy over its censorship of sexually explicit or violent footage, to this day Eirin remains the sole organization handling the task of rating films, and its history mirrors the public’s changing attitudes toward what is and isn’t socially acceptable.

Don’t you find the last part quite surprising? Pleasing the public’s conscience…
