That’s more like it! While Yoshida, for example, is still not represented, they now have some Shinoda, Masumura, and even Wakamatsu in there. I have only seen around 40% of the list, but it’s good to know there’s still so much left to explore.
Still no Terayama, Gosha, or Sono? Tsukamoto finally makes it but for both Tetsuo films but not A Snake Of June?
Sono’s got Noriko’s Dinner Table in there at #58. Anyway, why is Tora-san represented by both the whole series at #78, and individual movies at #143 and #152? And look at the years on 37-58, 59-105 and 106-198. I guess they’ve arranged chronologically all the movies with the same amount of votes, which would mean that those are the movies that got three votes, two and one vote, so only the places down to #30 represent any sort of consensus anyway.
strange, i thought ‘a crazy family’ by sogo ishii was much better than his crazy thunder road or burst city. i highly recommend it.
no akira? ghost in the shell? i dont understand the love that Hayao Miyazaki gets. also i’ll have to recommend ‘mind game’.
in these top 100 lists, i dont take much opinion on rank, since its hard to rank a comedy against a yakuza or drama anyways. in other words, ignore the numbers and focus on the movies.
I miss Kawase’s unbearable emotions and Miike’s raging insanity, but that’s a truly fine list. Departures on 196th is an extremely precise placing.
This is indeed a strange list. But since they’ve have Himatsuri on it I can’t complain. It’s also given me some good ideas for movies to track down. For example I didn’t know that a live action movie of ‘The Girl Who Leapt Through Time’ was made in the 80′s, and if I had known I probably would have assumed it was bad.
Tora-san having a ‘series’ entry and individual film entries is weird, but also ‘Battles Without Honor and Humanity’ and ‘Proxy War’ get separate entries and there is no ‘series’ entry. Was ‘Proxy War’ that much better than the other sequels? Why did that one get singled out?
Also, #101 is written “Crazyon Shin-chan” above, it should be “Crayon Shin-chan”. And why multiple people chose that as one of greatest Japanese ‘films’ of all time is beyond me. For me this is the weirdest entry on the list.
It is an interesting list though many fillms are hard to find.
i am surprised by the abscence of Kinugasa s Page of Madness.
I would also like to see The face of another (Teshigahara),
The Funeral Parade of the Roses (Matsumoto) or Death by
Hanging (Oshima).
“i dont understand the love that Hayao Miyazaki gets.”
Because he makes actual, meaningful movies, loved by both audiences and critics, and not violent pornography for otakus.
Burmese Harp?
Fires on the Plain?
After Life?
The Face of Another?
Those are like amongst my favorite movies from anywhere!
Forgot Kikujiro as well…
