First Squad - The Moment of Truth (2009)

As surprising as it may sound, First Squad is a failure.

Why? Everything seemed perfect; a new film from Studio 4°C (Genius Party Beyond), an incredible story set during WW2 on the Russian front in 1942 about the invisible fight between Nazis & Soviets, a soundtrack made by Dj Krush.

Unfortunately, it’s a mess. A short one (73min), but still, a mess. First, the story: it doesn’t even try to tell one, it just gathers ideas and never develops them. Basically, we know that the lead character, a girl named Nadya, has some strange powers, she has the ability to foresee the ‘Moment of Truth’. But, this goes nowhere. We’ll discover her past, several times. And again, it’s useless.

Other characters will be treated the same. They look all very interesting, but you won’t know much! Why are Nadya’s friends so special? Who is the Colonel? And the Bad girls? Why the Wise guy can’t be killed? No answers are given. So, at some point, it’s not just boring, it becomes frustrating. Especially when the plot looked so promising; the occult war between Nazis (Ahnenerbe) – summoning old knights – and Soviets – able to go to the land of the dead!

But the real life interviews are the worst idea. Because yes, the film is cut with some veterans, doctors, historians… talking about their experiences. You’re watching one of the few action sequences, and then suddenly, an old guy talks. “Experiences” was maybe a big word, in reality, they’re just explaining to you what you are watching/about to watch. For example, you’ll learn that war is tragic. In the end, it just kills the film’s pacing.

# TL;DR
• You’ve seen the trailer? You’ve seen the best parts of the film!
- Disappointing
- No story
- No characters
- Aweful & useless live footage
- 73min and yet it’s boring.
+ Cool soundtrack
+ Cool opening
= 2/10
