Review for Kazuaki Kiriya's Goemon

From this french review, some points need to be shared:

# An ambitious entertainment project is always welcome, especially in an industry filled with kawaii-high-pitched-voices-idols & weirdos stuff.

# As pointed out earlier, the japanese critic film response for this film was desastrous. Not because the film has obvious flaws, but because of Kiriya’s personal life…

# The story of Goemon is uselessly complicated. It takes 45min to settle the whole background & connections between characters. Then, the film starts explaining every little things, through flashbacks (many). Mystery is useless…

# It’s oppressive, like the photography. Lots of filters, oversaturated colors. At least, Goemon’s Japan feudal is original: castles look like a mix between the Ancient Rome, Gothic Medieval Cathedrals and the Japanese Tradition. And warriors are coming directly from the Arthurian Legend!

# The green screen technology is supposed to bring an epic style, but it just reveals more flaws: Kiriya knows how to make ninjas jump to the sky, but fails to convey emotions, to use this technology as a narrative tool.

# In the end, it looks more like a video clip than a video game, even though characters do look like poor super famicom sprites sometimes (during action scenes).

# Anyway, Kazuaki Kiriya is one the few japanese directors who can bring the 3-D Revolution into the Japanese Film Industry.

Needs a rating? 5/10.
