Goemon Vs. Speed Racer

‘Cause both films use the blue/green-screen technology but differently. And it’s not that usual for a j-film to be that ambitious, even if it’s not perfect:

THE TECHNOLOGY
SR fully integrates the blue-screen/CGI into the story, reinforcing the sensitive experience of it. Like the “ghost car” at the beginning, used to link flowingly the past & the present (a powerful narrative tool).

In Goemon, the technology is just one way to create the fantastic feudal universe. It’s cool to watch. But it’s not part of the narrative.

THE MESSAGE
Basically, SR deals with the self-experience of life and how one can reach what’s called happiness (after all, the final line was “it’s beauty+ful!”).

While Goemon, avoids dilligently everythings that’s interesting during the story to finally conclude on a “war isn’t cool” type of message (duh!).

Now I’m really looking forward seeing Kiriya’s next project, let’s hope he’ll eventually stop telling stories like a (bad) publicist. But it seems he’s one of the few actual directors able to bring the japanese cinema to the 21st century.
