Some good eyes noticed on the PIFF’s screening schedule that an extended version of Park Chan-Wook’s Thirst was screened. More precisely, it’s 10 minutes longer and according to the PIFF:
This version poses a question with which the director has long wrestled: where the distinctions between the sacred and secular, and between the abstinent and debauched ought to lie. The form of a murder-divine has been an issue of the transcendental being since ancient times.
Contacted by mail, CJ Entertainment (company producing the film) said this version will be released on DVD in South Korea. What about other territories? “it is not decided yet“. Also, the reason for this extended version “was the director’s intention” BUT it’s not a director’s cut, “this is ‘longer version’“. Quite unusual for a south korean film, right?

This is a pretty good film from Park (after the abysmal Cyborg) but too long. The second half drags, and has too much melodrama. I’m not sure adding 10 minutes is a good idea. Removing 20 would be better…
