As Jason Gray stated in an article published last June, the 3D technology is starting to interest the Japanese Film Industry. You may have already heard of Takashi Shimizu’s The Shock Labyrinth (teaser), the first 3D J-Film to be made. And more should come out next year.
But, so far, 3D is only seen as a toy. Meaning, films aren’t really trying to take advantages of this technology, it’s just some pop-up 3D stuff added to scare the audience. What about thinking/creating the whole film in 3D? The famous 3D Experience.
Of course, the perfect example is now James Cameron’s Avatar. In December, it’ll be interested to see the reaction of the (Japanese) Film Industry. Just imagine a real 3D chambara where you’re right in the middle of a samurai fight. Will that kind of projects be a reality next year? We should ask Kazuaki ‘Goemon’ Kiriya.

Ho man! I was there, the A-D, I saw the 3d experience!! Twice! Outside I thought that’s the future guys but people dont know yet. Since then I lost faith in oldies of all kind.
I know you didnt live the A-D cuz you’r thinking small, you don’t want a samurai fight but a large and epic samurai battle. The fucking FUTURE man!!!!
“that’s the future guys but people dont know yet.”
Right. That’s why I wasn’t surprised to see “0 comment” here. But I’m sure, things will be different starting soon. It seems like 3D technology isn’t yet obvious for a lot of people (ie, check any Avatar threads, in any forums). But anyway, I really feel a revolution is happening, I don’t know what major j-studios intend to do (maybe nothing), but I wouldn’t be surprised to see a strong 3D answer from some animation studios.
(3D) Projects to watch are maybe not coming from Shochiku/Toho, but from Studio 4°c, MadHouse and stuff like that. I mean at this level, even Kiriya’s Goemon already appears to be a failed attempt, trying to mix live-action stuff with tons of CGI/green screen. It’s already old school!
who f….. cares!
I hate “computer games”…..
That would just be good for the popcorn producers…..
Well, correct me if i’m wrong but, what you say is that compared to most of the 3D movies (those for kids), Avatar is a movie made in 3D not for impress kids or to be fun but, but to be serious,.. realistic and to feel the 3D experience?
I’m confused because the “3D experience” is something past, that we used to see at the and of 90s, when firsts real 3D video games were released, and when everybody were impress of 3D. 3D is now something usual cause we see it everywhere so its not really impressive anymore but still, a great animation technique.
I don’t think Japaneses are very interested in 3D cinema. They make 2D animated movies like nobody does in the world, and compared to the West, they don’t use it to make funny movies or kids movies but to be serious, like Oshii does so well. Americans uses advanced computer techniques and as a way to make movies that are funny and meaningless like Walt disney does so… well.
I think 3D is something less important for Japanese than Americans because they always made 2D animated movies and it never be rejected from the audience cause they see it in the same way as creators. They are accustomed to see basic animation in japanese video games, on tv, in pachinko… 3D is something more impressive and americans love that.
