I’d like to share with you what I like about Japanese Cinema:
#1 Discovering Films
Unlike West-european & U.S. cinemas, there are still many, many many, japanese films to discover. Old or new, whatever, most of them haven’t been released in the West. Just pick one film, maybe you’ll find something amazing, who knows? You?
#2 Any Genre You Want
From pure entertainment to artistic films, make your choice! Japanese Cinema offers a great choice of genre, and what’s more important, it includes (many) masterpieces.
#3 Masterpieces, are, masterpieces
When I use the word masterpiece, I mean it. Films bringing new and surprising ideas, things you’ve never seen before. In one word, it’s pure Cinema. You just have to open your eyes.
#4 Another look on the world
You might think I’m glorifying Japanese Cinema, well, all I know is that films directed by great filmmakers, telling (great) stories, offer an amazing way to learn about mankind and the world. Samurais, political issues or whatever are great tools to make an audience learn something!

For me, it’s mainly about cute girls.
I’d say the initial pull of Japanese cinema was the amount of sword fights promised. Most other cultures don’t have such an impressive pedigree of hand-to-hand combat.
I’m with Ash on this one. The sword fights got me into Japanese cinema and I still love ‘em the best.
#5 could be the great movie stars. Toshiro Mifune, Setsuko Hara, Tatsuya Nakadai, Hiroyuki Sanada, and Tadanobu Asano just to name a few. #6 the great directors. Too many to list…
