From Cannes: Brillante Mendoza's Kinatay

It seems Kinatay has shocked the cannes audience! The film is about a criminology student working as a protection fees collector for a gang in Manila. But he needs money, and accepts a “special project” that pays a lot. Here are the first impressions:

@leoatinrocks> Mendoza’s Kinatay should get everyone talking like Serbis last year. And again, it’s a very good film.

@gemko> Kinatay (’09 Mendoza): 45/C. I guess. Not sure what to do with this, really—it seems kind of extravagantly pointless.

@Krassakopoulos> B. Mendoza’s Kinatay: innocent cop to be gets involved into kidnap and execution. Better than Serbis but that doesn’t say much.

@Pzready> I like Thierry Fremaux, but I don’t understand his sponsorship of Brilliante Mendoza. Kinatay is more or less appalling.

@erickohn> First big boo of the festival: KINATAY. Mendoza ticks off the Cannes crowd once again.

@benkenigsberg> KINATAY: How could they not show this on a double bill with the Noé?

@f_inter> Brillante Mendoza was booed at the end of the press screening… we should boo the booers.

Here is a film that forces me to apologize to Vincent Gallo for calling “The Brown Bunny” the worst film in the history of the Cannes Film Festival. —Roger Ebert’s Journal

The press reviews will follow!
