A month after the french release of Still Walking, Hirokazu Kore-eda is already back in France with his new film, Air Doll. And for some people, it’s a disappointment saved by the lead actress Bae Doo-na. Let’s check the 1st reviews:
From Screendaily
[...] Although the bill may be too ambitious and Kore-eda’s approach too diffused, Air Doll does offer food for thought, poetical imagination galore, a touching performance by Korean actress Bae Doo-na in the lead part and superb, crystal-clear images provided by Hong Kong cameraman Mark Lee Ping-bing (In the Mood for Love).
From Variety
[...] a beautifully lensed and charmingly played modern fairy tale [...] Recut to a trim 90 minutes, this fragile yarn would work perfectly and have a chance of an afterlife as a specialty item. In its present form, pic may not get much farther than the fest netherworld.
From Dvdrama (fre)
An interesting fantastical point of view crushed by cliched metaphysical questions about identity, loneliness and memory. 6/10
As you can see, the film is clearly not as popular as Park Chan-Wook’s, or Lou Ye’s. More reviews should come soon, I guess.
