During the In Memoriam segment of the 81st Academy Awards, actor Rentaro Mikuni (still alive) was mistaken for director Kon Ichikawa (who passed away a year ago).
The worst is that the footage used comes from a Criterion DVD for ‘The Burmese Harp’… which contains interviews of Rentaro Mikuni AND Kon Ichikawa. Bad luck, right?
According to J-Film, the Acadamy quickly apologized. What about Mikuni? Well, it seems he just laughed! Here’s the full In Memoriam video:
